The dictionary defines solidarity as “unity that produces and is based on shared interests, objectives, and standards.” That’s the spirit that drives the Union Mask Brigade. We’re workers who saw a need and are pitching in to help our fellow workers in the best American can-do tradition.

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed a number of areas in which our nation was simply not prepared. Nowhere is this more true than in the workplace, where far too many men and women have been asked to do their jobs without the personal protective equipment they need to keep themselves and those around them safe.

A big part of the problem is that corporations have moved production of critical products like masks and other PPE from the U.S. to low-wage countries. When a crisis like Covid-19 creates a spike in demand, the supply chain lies outside our borders and beyond our control. Our labor movement has long called for an end to this kind of offshoring of American jobs that leaves us vulnerable in an emergency.

In the meantime, we won’t just sit back and hope someone comes up with a solution. As union workers, we feel a responsibility to everyone on the job. It’s in our nature to look at a problem and figure out what we can do about it. That’s how the Union Mask Brigade was born.
